Part-time artist, part-time selector, Tony Matterhorn, is once again causing trouble in the industry. This time, it's his new recording titled "Duppy Attack" which has been making headlines, getting a whole lot of attention and stirring tensions too. The song is a 'diss' (disrespect) record geared at some of Reggae Dancehall's top and in-form artistes. Matterhorn hits each artist hard with lyrics designed to poke fun about happenings in their personal lives.
So what is Tony Matterhorn up to? My take is that he is gearing up for Jamaica's Christmas season. As history tells us, each year, top dancehall artists target the month of December to gain momentum for the New Year. They believe that ending the year hot means starting the New Year even hotter! So, with this being said, one can understand why Tony Matterhorn has 'thrown the first stone!' When asked by Star, Tony said he did it for fun. But that's bullshit! As a selector, Tony Matterhorn is in demand all year around! But as an artist, lately his hype has been very quiet.. too quiet for an artist who starred on Jamaica's most popular stage show Sting in December of 2011, after 'killing' Dancehall act Twin of Twins in a highly publicised clash.
Tony Matterhorn is one of the smartest members of the Dancehall industry. He is a true self marketer in every sense, knowing just when its the right time to step outside of the box. He will never admit it, but Tony thrives on attention! He can't stand not being the life of the party. Therefore, he has masterminded what I am calling "Project Matterhorn Mania." He simply follows the hype and capitalizes on whatever is 'in' at the time by either joining the fad or finding a very loud and inappropriate way of opposing it. Whichever road he chooses he never fails to grab the eyes and ears of eager Dancehall fans.
You gotta love Tony though, he is one of the best in the selecting game and the only one that can apparently publicly 'diss' all the top Dancehall artists and still gather dubplates from them....... WOOOW..... LOL!!!
