Over the years many of the industry's top sound systems have proudly bragged about the age of their sound system. We the fans of the industry have never questioned if their age is true or false, we just accepted it for what it is. However, since the inception of my Sound Chat programme I am learning that many of these sound systems were not fully functional during the golden era of the 70's & 80's.
The math simply doesn't add up for some of these sounds and when speaking to historians there is no acknowledgement of them being part of the certain milestone in the industry's history.
I spoke to a host of sound system owners today and these are the ages they gave for their sound systems:
- Killamanjaro 1969
- Stone Love 1972
- Mighty Crown 1991
- Bass Odyssey 1989
- Metro Media 1975
- Black Kat 1988
- Stur Gav 1971
- Bodyguard 1988
So here is the big question for all die-hearted sound systems fans. When should the birth of a sound system be recorded?
Should it be:-
(A) When the first record was purchased by the owner of the sound system in question
OR
(B) When the sound system played its first gig.
OR
(C) When the sound system got it's name
