Recently I had a long and heated conversation with a clash fan from Canada. After watching a few of my SOUND CHATS and reading my BLOGS, this person accused me of not rating Canada's contribution to the clash arena and acting as if New York and King Addies are the center of sound clash...lol!! I can't lie the conversation caught me off guard! I was like WTF!! Out of all the information offered in SOUND CHAT, this is what this person decides to debate with me on ?
First of all I would never diss Canada. There are alot of great sounds there. But as far as international contributions go Canada is not even on the list! Outside of Jamaica, the arenas major terrories were NEW YORK and the UK. Canada never had an international renown clash sound until Rebel Tone won World Clash. And even then Canada was not greatly respected in the arena because Rebel Tone did not deliver after their victory.
I always speak of New York because it has a great history as far as sound clashing goes. Not because I was born in New York. I speak of King Addies in my interviews because in America they set the standards in which all sounds were judged in the 90's, not because I am a fan of Addies. In the UK... Saxon was the sound that set the standard and molded the clash culture in their territory. I speak little of Saxon in my publications only because my knowledge of the UK's arena is limited, but I rate Saxon all the way. If a person in the UK was to argue that I need to speak more about the UK's arena, I would agree but one can't expect me to talk about Canada and their sound culture because Canada has always flown under the radar. They never made it internationally! What does this person want me to do? Make shit up! lol
Let's be clear... I know there were clashes back in the day in Canada, but not much were strong enough to spread throughout the world and create an impact. This is the reason why it has been so hard for the bad.. talented ..young sounds... in Canada to gain respect out side their country. It's because the sounds before them did a poor job at waving the Canadian flag in the international arena. Therefore, a lack of international respect was inherited by the next generation of Canadian sounds. However, today things are a little different! Sounds from Canada are fighting harder to grab international success and have been competing outside of the country to do so.
I wish Canada all the best in their quest for fame inside the arena but I will not praise them until such is done. Nevertheless their has always been particular sound systems in Canada in which I've held in high regard, among the few are Black Reaction and Tasha Roses.
