As most of you should already know come the first Friday in December New York will be hosting Global Clash, New York's premier sound clash event. This year the lineup is very, very interesting. It features; King Addies, Yard Beat, Supersonic, Rootsman and Black Kat. I had a long conversation with Andrew Digital, the promoter about this year's event and other issues surrounding the arena. It was clash talk. We went off the subject a little at times, but let it be understood..... Its two promoters/clash fans vibin! Once that happens it's always hard to stay on one topic. LOL!! Our conversation is attached to this blog so feel free to take a listen ( Posted in 3 parts for those of you that don't have time to listen all at once).
For weeks many of you been asking me the question: Who does Chin feel will be victorious? I think its time that i reveal my answer and its not about who i think should win, its more about who the industry needs to win ......many of you will view my answer as controversial but the prize goes to..... King Addies (hopefully without Tony Matterhorn).
Please understand the logics behind my choice. King Addies clinching a victory in today's modern arena will bring back hope and interest to our sport. Many of you may feel that Addies /Babyface are "has beens", however the industry has failed to produce a new generation of sound systems that can perform up to the standards set by such "has beens" as King Addies, Killamanjaro, Bodyguard etc. Therefore it is quite essential for these "has beens" to exist in the upcoming generation.
This is no disrespect to any of the younger sound systems on this year's bill because I rate them all in different ways. Nevertheless, they cannot create the spark that is needed to get the energy flowing in the arena. Such lack of energy has nothing to do with a lack of talent. It has everything to do with the fact that older sounds are more established bearing a solid fan base and the reputation needed to lure fans back into the arena. Often we forget that credibility is a very important factor in the game of sound clash. Fans want to be assured that the sound systems appearing on a bill can deliver. Gaining their confidence is not an overnight process, in fact clash fans are expecting the young sounds to face off and defeat all of the top names of yesterday in order to become a star of today's arena. The reason why the industry is lacking champion sounds is because the young ones are stagnant in growth. There are no active sounds with a large reputation and or merit for these upcoming sounds to challenge. As a result, for the past few years young sounds have been clashing among themselves which has gotten them nowhere.
Addies successfully becoming a force in the modern day arena will lure other retired sounds systems to follow suit. Once these high caliber sounds return a demand for them to face off with the new sounds in the current arena will occur. This will ultimately grant younger sounds the platform needed to upgrade their status to the next level. Many of you will find this debatable but these are my views.
The only thing that younger sounds can offer the arena without the return of the "has beens" is entertainment. They will not increase patronage and we will face an era of poorly attended clashes.
